Parent Involvement Policy

Ursa Minor Elementary School is the pulse of a diverse military community and serves the children of America’s Arctic Warriors. The mission of Ursa Minor Elementary School is to facilitate the growth of students into knowledgeable, self-sufficient, caring citizens, capable of navigating in a global society. Through discovery and exploration, students will participate in developmentally appropriate experiences in a safe environment of unconditional respect for others and uncompromising commitment to excellence and challenge.

Years of research show that parent and family involvement increases student achievement and success. In order to support and promote essential parent involvement, our school provides opportunities for parent involvement organized around the six National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement adopted by National PTA.

1) COMMUNICATING – Communication tools may include newsletters, report cards, and other progress reports, parent-teacher conferences, course/scheduling information, student handbooks, email, our school website, phone calls, flyers etc.

Here’s how our school helps ensure communication between home and school is regular, two-way, and meaningful:

2) PARENTING – Activities may include parenting workshops, parent information centers, accessibility and availability of Family School Services Coordinator and School Counselor for individual assistance, collaboration with Fort Richardson Army Community Service.

Here’s how our school helps promote and support responsible parenting:

o Assets Parent Training

o Survival Skills for Healthy Families Workshops

o Support Family Advocacy classes offered by Army Community Service
o Use of Part-Time FSSC and Full-Time School Counselor

o Home Visits

o First Grade Make It/Take It and Demonstration Workshops


3) STUDENT LEARNING – Examples include information on ways parents can help students with specific projects, grade level performance standards, interactive homework assignments, helping students set and reach educational goals, understanding their unique learning styles etc

o Parent assistance with Science Fair, Math Derby, Battle of the Books and other activities

4) VOLUNTEERING - Examples include a welcoming climate, opportunities for volunteerism during and outside regular school hours, accessible parent volunteer programs and training, volunteer appreciation, meaningful activities based on volunteer interests and abilities.

5) SCHOOL DECISION MAKING AND ADVOCACY – Provide well-publicized processes for influencing decisions, raising issues or concerns, and resolving problems; form school PTAs or other parent groups; encourage participation on advisory committees; involve parents in setting school goals; and involve parents in decisions that affect their children.
Here’s how our school ensures parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families:

6) COLLABORATING WITH COMMUNITY – Utilize community resources; develop partnerships; foster student participation in community service; involve community members in school volunteer programs.
Here’s how our school makes community resources available to strengthen school programs, family practices, and student learning:

o Army Hospital Personnel assist with annual dental screenings

o School Climate Surveys

o Open House

o DARE Program

o School/Business Partnership with Task Force 1-501 (soldiers reading with students, assisting with special programs

o Platoon Sponsorship Program

o Army Community Service Tour

o Facility use for community activities: scouts, sports, meetings etc.

o Attendance and participation at Community Action Council Meetings

o Frequent coordination with Garrison Commander, USARAK.

o HUGGS (free school supplies for needy children)

o Shoeboxes for Kids (Holiday gifts for needy children)

o Alaska Junior Theater

o Alaska Fish and Game Educational Programs

o Kindergarten Transition Program for Preschool Age

o Chugach Electrical Assemblies

Ursa Minor Elementary School is committed to supporting these 6 National Standards for Parent Involvement adopted by National PTA and has adopted this Parent Involvement Policy on September 30, 2005.
